GCSE Final Countdown: Macbeth and Poetry
These two sessions will focus on the key skills required for success in GCSE questions on Macbeth and Poetry (Anthology and Unseen)
In 2023, AQA English Literature Paper One takes place on Wednesday 17th May. Paper Two takes place on Wednesday 24th May. Our sessions are designed to take place the Sunday before each exam, offering a final revision boost.
MACBETH
For Macbeth, students following the AQA syllabus will be asked to write about an extract from the play, and then respond more widely to the play as a whole.
Our revision session will cover:
- How to approach extract based questions (character / theme)
- How to integrate context in a relevant and sophisticated way
- How to analyse language and structure in the play to maximise marks
- In-depth focus on 2 characters and 2 themes (students can request these in advance..eg. Lady Macbeth, or Kingship)
- Exemplar questions and peer assessment

Time: 1pm – 3.30pm
POETRY
Students following the AQA syllabus will be asked to compare two poems from their anthologies. One will be a named poem and the other they will need to select from the poems they’ve learned. Students will also need to answer two questions on two unseen poems. The anthology poems will be based on the Power and Conflict cluster
Our revision session will cover:
- How to approach comparison questions
- How to structure successful comparative paragraphs
- How to integrate context in a relevant and sophisticated way
- How to analyse language and structure to maximise marks
- How to approach both unseen questions
- Exemplar questions and peer assessment
